Newbie :)

by Masik » Jul 1st, '10, 15:51

Hello Tea lovers!
I just discovered this wonderful website, and jumped right in!
I'm Marina, living in San Francisco suburbs and I LOVE Japanese tea...ware :) Our family is on a decaf regime, so I mostly enjoy different kinds of fruit flavored tea.
I'd love to try matcha tea, but am wondering if they even have decaf versions at all...

Hi and welcome!! No decaf matcha, since it is made by grinding whole leaves.

Welcome to tea chat!

"regime" sounds kind of suspicious.....but assuming it's not simply a nefarious plot to deprive you of the fun of genuine camellia sinensis, there are a whole lot of caffeine-free wonderful things that can be used for teas and tisanes. And living in the San Francisco Bay Area, you have very good access to shops with a wide variety of different herbs for putting together your own tea mixes.

My favorite herbal tea right now is Lemon Myrtle Rooibos, available from The Cultured Cup. I haven't seen this blend widely available. After securing a supply of that, I'd recommend heading for some ethnic markets and herb shops to gather a variety of things to mix and match in your tisanes: chamomile is almost always a nice base, peppermint leaf, cinnamon sticks, ginger root, hibiscus blossoms (very tart & fruity), dried citrus peels, licorice root (amazingly sweet, not overpoweringly strong otherwise, a nice background element used with a light hand), and Tulsi (dried holy basil makes a wonderful spicy tisane all by itself), rose hips, and you might have to resort to mail order for some Korean hydrangea leaf.

Then play, and let us know what great things you come up with.
