So all you potter-pros say, but do you know how impossible it is to either find someone who does these repairs, or any information on how to do it? :(

Geekgirl,

You are correct....... almost impossible to find someone to do it. Everyone I know that could do it is in museum restoration. You can get a good mortgage on the work.

To do it yourself...... it is like learning to do photography. A little bit of knowledge... and a LOT of practical application and practice before you get any good at it. More coaching...... and over and over and over....... ad nauseaum.

If you choose to use real urushi... there is the allergy issue too. So most people are no really interested in trying it.

I was simply kidding Chip. :D

best,

................john

You know, I'm absolutely fascinated by the art, and would LOVE to know where I can learn or train to repair fine ceramics and porcelain in this style. I suspect I'd be good at it too. Google has failed me though, so I'm not exactly sure how to make that happen.

Geekgirl,

Contact your closest fine art museum with a good asian collection and let them know you are interested. Odds are they can point you to a mentor.

best,

Thank you! It never occurred to me, but I will try this! I wonder if the Japanese Garden curator could help with this? The Shoji Ceramic Showcase opens there in a couple of weeks. It's their annual show.

It's a show/sale of Japanese and Japanese-style ceramic arts from bonsai vessels to vases to tea utensils, both ceremonial and everyday. There are also some paper arts for display/sale, but the Shoji Showcase is primarily about the ceramics. It's amazing, and I never miss it. I usually save up some funds because there are artists there who are semi-local, but somewhat inaccessible - including usually a nice display of woodfired shinos.

Can't wait!

GEEK, sorry, did not mean to ignore your question. I submitted my reply to nickE and THEN saw your post about Seiho, hit edit and the CoNcast internet completely crashed again. Still crashed. So, borrowing internet this AM. And then CoNcast is expected this afternoon.

Anyway, not going with the gold repair  ... this piece is not worth it (not the $$$ Seho, Geek). This is my everyday kyusu that only cost around 30 bucks. I do like it, and ran out to get J-B Weld per the Yixing topic. Since this is a handle, I will be using more, and then I will use my Eagle Scout skillz and lash the handle with some hemp string. Hope it works!

This is the second broken handle due to a cat in maybe 4 years, the last one is the Kikumare, which I "welded" yesterday. Heh, was going really well, had it all together with no mess ... then the whole thing collapsed, and then it got messy.

Well, better late than never. I am the sports fanatic in the family and have had the pleasure of meeting lots of famous athletes. A very dear friend of ours had played in the NBA for 14 years, in fact I was along with him and his family to the NBA draft in Indy where I met all the 'young' upstarts, Jason Kidd, Grant Hill, Glenn Robinson, Jalen Rose along with some old timers ... Isaiah Thomas, Chris Mullen to mention a few.

Chip and I got to shake hands and spend some time with Johnny Unitas at a special fund raiser in honor of Lenny Moore's son. Franco Harris, Rosie Grier, Ray Lewis and many many others were there. It was a virtual 'Football Lover's Dream!"

Two years ago I was in Cleveland for one of the NBA playoff games and my nephew and I met Danny Ferry along with most of the team, including a special time spent with the LeBron at the team's private dinner area above the arena. Believe it or not, he was a little more humble at the time. Well, at least he took the time to talk with us!

One last thing, I am a florist and have had the opportunity to create florals for and/or to meet celebrities such as Regis and his wife Kathy, Patti LaBelle, Cher, Elton John, Donny Osmond, lots of the 'Idol' kids, and numerous jazz singers and players since we host a JAZZ Fest here yearly. Apolo Ono, the Olympic speed skater, used to have my cell number to call whenever, to send flowers to his then girlfriend, Allison Baver, another Olympian who also resides here when she is not 'speed skating!' Oh, and we created floral designs for Anthony Bourdain's 'No Reservations' one Holiday show.

Name dropping probably doesn't mean so much to all you TeaHeads, but it was fun to meet all these celebrities, as long as it is kept in perspective that they are just people like us.
