Aluminium chagama?

by Miyabi » Jun 27th, '10, 11:24

Hi everyone!
A friend of mine bought a chagama (kettle for japanese tea ceremony) in Japan - not made of cast iron like usual, but of aluminium  !
It has a nice arare-pattern and really looks like the "real thing".
Sadly, he has no idea where or how to get one of those outside Japan / online. :?
Does anyone know an online shop selling something along these lines?

Of course I know about the "iron is better for the taste" etc. points for buying a real one.
Well, for the time being I wouldn't mind saving a "few" bucks (my friend told me he payed about 50$ - cast iron ones usually start at 200-300$ ...!) and just get a "real lokking" one.
Also, considering the light weight, shipping from Japan shouldn't be as expensive as for iron kama/tetsubin. (this sounds also handy for picknick)

So, if anyone knows a shop for these ("Tetsu"bin in alu would be interesting, too... :P ) please tell me. Thank you!

Cheerio!

"keiginbin" maybe?

but... aluminum... really? that could be a health hazard, especially if it isn't anodized aluminum. Even if it wasn't a health hazard it might not affect the taste in a positive direction.

I don't suppose there's an off chance of it being a sand-iron tetsubin... or a silver tetsubin... ? :D

Um, it's REALLY light and the walls are quite thin, maybe 1mm. And I think the surface may be treated looking a dull black like newly cast iron. As for the actual material - most likely aluminium (weight & price), but it may be something else. I also think it's pressed in an upper and lower half, then joint in the middle, instead of cast. The knob on top of the lid can rotate freely like the ones on many "normal" chagama. It's new, so not an antiquity-shop bargain or something.

Also, the shape is not a testubin but a real kama - that is, without a spout for pouring, one needs a hishaku for pouring water.

Silver - hm, no chance at 50$ I think.

I hope I can get some pictures soon, the time I saw it I was in a hurry and couln't snatch a shot...

So maybe not alu but an alloy... :?:
Just the price is VERY different frm what I heard!
So either it's a different material or ... Well, at least a starting point for a search!

O.K., search for 志きの釜 (shiki no kama) revealed many items - prices are really about as high as iron kama.
Hm.

I have seen several chagama's on ebay in different price range. Perhaps you can find something for yourself...
