Rarely, but when it happens, it's usually because I refuse to pay more for shipping than for the tea itself. Yellow tea vendors take note.

This always happens to me. I am an incorrigible cheapskate, hahaha... Also, I like teas that can get really pricey (oh hi there, pu-erh and gyokuro ).

Nah, if I refuse to buy them, I am not tempted. But that doesn't really happen very often.

Yes. Not too often, but it happens. When there is a high priced tea that looks good but is not available in small quantities (eg, 100g or more as minimum order), or one that looks interesting but I can't read enough to be comfortable knowing what I'm getting (often the case with puerhs, when there is essentially no labelling in English and the cake is $100+), or when it is just hard to imagine one being enough better than ones I am currently enjoying to justify the additional cost (e.g., teas from non-traditional sources with higher production costs, like Hawaii or New Zealand).

My most expensive (per gram) teas have all been bought in very small quantities, 25-50 grams, and generally from sources I've dealt with before or have heard about extensively from forums like this one.

Happens sometimes, but I rarely give in and buy something that I think is overpriced.

Slept in wayyy late today. Decided to continue with a sample of the 2001 Mingyuanhao Yiwu from HouDe. It's quite smooth, very dry storage is evident. I am a fan of wet storage however, and found this somewhat boring for a cake of this age.

I have certainly looked at many teas that I simply walked away from based virtually on price alone. For many teas, the increase in pleasure does not increase as fast as price. So you can have an excellent tea for say 25$ and one only marginally better for 35$. I have picked my price comfort zone in the last 11ish years, it suits me well. I rarely see little reason to venture outside of this zone.

Exceptions, the rare Gyokuro I buy. And matcha. And the occasional green oolong.

Began the TD with a tasting of Nishi a la Rishi. This is quite good, though it is not the easiest to nail each time. I nailed it this time! Next up, matcha in a new Tenmoku ShyRabbit Chawan with the Mrs.

Yunnan Noir at work today, now fixing up some Four Seasons Oolong (that I just finally opened, I've been resisting - but no longer!!) to take to the theatre tonight.

I never flat out refuse to buy a tea based on price alone...the closest I come to that is if I think a tea isn´t worth the price point but might be worth buying at a lower price...but then I´m being influenced by other factors quite a bit.

Teas that are very expensive and worth the price point I don´t often buy but I don´t find myself rejecting them...they´re just waiting on my "want to buy list" for some day when I have a bigger tea budget.

have been drinking Bukhial Estate Assam today...it´s lighter (less malty and bitter, more fruity) than typical Assam and I can get a lot of infusions out of it for a black tea

Today TeaDay has been notable for a wide range of tea price points. The first shincha (Sayamakaori from Yuuki-Cha) was probably about $20/100g, and quite delightful, as always; the second, a Pouchong, was about $7/100g (an ok brew, mostly notable for it having been my first introduction to the greener style of oolong); and the third is a $100/100g Da Wu Ye Dan Cong Oolong from TeaHabitat (about as expensive as I've ever bought).

The last is definitely giving more pleasure per gram than the other two, because I'm using a tiny amount of leaf and getting big, big flavor out of it; happiness per dollar? Who knows. But the degree of attention it requires to really shine--and the way the flavor flattens when held after brewing--means that it will continue to be an occasional tea, fortunately for the teaBudget!
