what snacks/sweets during your session?

by sebpassion » Sep 20th, '10, 12:13

hi green-tea-fanatics :)

what's your favourite food or sweets during you green-tea-session? or do your always drink green tea with your normal meal?

most of the time i drink green tea after my meal as a kind of dessert with dark chocolate or sweets like kitkat etc.

but i also tried it with fruits like apples and pears, which is a goddamn fresh combination :D

so let me know what you prefer!?!

We are talking greens, right?

I might nibble on a pretty neutral cracker ...

If it is a decent sencha, maybe a small piece of dark chocolate, but if it is a really good sencha, I won't eat anything before (up to 30 minutes before depending on the food) or during if I can help it. Towards the end of the tea, sure.

At a sushi bar, usually genmaicha ... would like to try a decent konacha in this case, but every sushi bar I have visited serves genmaicha it seems.

Generally however, having tea is about the tea for me. I don't want anything clouding the taste, experience.

Why bacon of course!

Kidding. Most of the time I eat nothing while I am drinking tea, esp. greens. Iced tea is a different story, and can go with lunch or other snacks.

Hummmmmm..........

Thinking back on sencha with fresh cut and peeled slices of nashi (Japanese pear), sitting around a kotatsu table on a crisp fall day in Mashiko, talking with friends about pottery.

Nashi and sencha go nicely together.

best,

I don't eat and drink hot tea at the same time, but like TwoPynts I do sometimes enjoy iced tea with my meals. :)

Like Chip I want something pretty neutral so I usually go for dry roasted, unsalted almonds. It takes the edge off after an hour or two of tea-drinking with nothing to eat.

Usually nothing except for some dark chocolate (not to dark) together with my matcha. Someday I would like to try some wagashi.

Like some others have said, I try not to eat too much before making some higher quality tea.

However, recently I have been eating a lot of spicy Korean stews or other dishes in the morning for breakfast and I find that sometimes when I drink tea about an hour later, the tastes are almost stronger...perhaps due to the extra blood-flow from all that pepper-powder? Who knows, but other than that I might nibble on something more neutral like red bean, sesame rice cakes or something in between infusions.

crackers and dark chocolate are common green tea snacks for me (though not both at the same time) I generally do have to eat something with tea...also I drink tea after meals but usually not during the meal.

Are you joking or being serious?

table water crackers are good for greens
fruits, esp the sweet ones seem to go well with both greens and oolongs
Now that I think on it, I don't usually have anything citrus while drinking tea

Depends on my mood, the particular tea, and what I have on hand for snacks. I regularly shop at the Asian market so I usually have plenty of choices.

I always eat some type of Japanese sweets before I drink my matcha in the morning. I don't know what they're called, but judging by the package they're intended to be consumed with matcha or some other type of green tea. There are many different types including pastries filled with red beans, green tea jam, custard, creme, etc.

I usually eat something in between infusions of tea if I'm hungry, but not often while I'm drinking it. When I do, I've found that Japanese dark and white chocolate with macedamia nuts (made by Meiji) actually go quite well with sencha. There are many Taiwanese snacks that go well with different oolongs; coconut egg rolls (like a cookie but with eggs added to the flour), sesame rolls, Taiwanese mochi with peanut, coffee and brown sugar wafers, etc.

I rarely keep American made snack food at home. I think it would contradict the health benefits of tea. The Japanese tend to make far healthier snacks than we have but they do use a lot of sugar and they must have a surpluss of red beans because they put them in just about everything. Some of the food products from Taiwan are also very good. They are about as close to pure and unadulterated as you will find, and the Taiwanese seem to use much less sugar giving a less sweet but pure taste. Using only four or five ingredients in a cookie is not unusual, but the lack of preservatives gives a shorter shelf life. I find the snack foods from Japan and Taiwan to be very fitting to consume with good quality, healthy tea.

Usually, nothing.

But sometimes when I've had a particularly terrible day at work and I need to relax with some tea but am also ravenously hungry, I'll take my greens with brown rice.

My particular favorite way of doing this lately is to shape the rice into little triangles and brush each side lightly with soy sauce, then pan fry them (no oil) just a few minutes on each side so the outside is just a bit crunchy. It's so, so lovely and the flavors seem to blend quite well with the tea.

Sometimes I think I could just live off of brown rice and tea.

I generally prefer not to eat anything while drinking tea. It definitely interferes with the flavors of my favorite drink. But, my wife loves to have monju which many of you know are bean pastes wrapped in mochi (pounded rice). The ones filled with chestnut are favorites. Luckily, I live in the Japanese quarter of Bangkok where many sweets can be had.
