I think it's kind of sad, really...
Coffee/chocolate always had better prices. Most of these areas simply didn't have access to the kind of infrastructure/transportation needed. Moreover, I suspect much of this is due to pressures by new coffee plant pests that are rendering other areas more experienced in production less profitable. I doubt most of these peasants are going to profit for very long, so I hope a new fad takes care of them 5-10 years on.
Thing is, old tree oranges are quite tasty too! If it's a good variety, then they should be pretty neat. But then stuff like this is why there are so few old tree teas.
