For quite a while I used to use an old cream pitcher as a fair cup, and while I since got a glass fair cup, I have started to use a piece of pottery in the same pattern as the cream pitcher as a teaboat when brewing tea with a gaiwan.

Brewed up more of TeaMasters 2008 High Roast TGY yesterday. Now drinking Nada's 2010 Sun Moon Lake black.

I thought a little more about this question; I also use very cheap waste water collection devices. Either a $3 bowl, or sometimes even an old Nalgene bottle when I'm at school! It works well, though.

It is not so much the cost per se. It is how sometimes a low cost item can be a valuable piece in terms of enhancement or use.

I just thought I'd share my favorite humble tea accoutrement. No tea session is complete without them!

I want to say yes, but rather it is two sets of items that I couldn't live without anymore. One set is my tea tasting set. I use this for almost every session and I am in love with it. The other one was just completed by a friend of mine who gave me a gong fu pot. The gong fu pot completes my aroma set which has been priceless to me. Even without the gong fu pot I have used that thing many times and it always makes my tea experiences better.

I will be honest, there will probably come a day when I have a ton of tea ware, but as it is now, I only tend to buy the things that I feel I need for my tea ware. I don't go looking for the cheapest things, but I often find things that are not very expensive but provide amazing service to me.

More often than not, if I am not making sencha in a kyusu or bulk brewing for the thermos, I'm using one of my $2.99 gaiwans, while my little 'yixing' pots sit in their cabinet yet again.

And Monday's tea day was some of the sample of the beautiful Yong De braided puerh from Norbu, just right for a rainy day; yesterday, some Houjicha for another rainy afternoon, and Anji 'white' tea in the evening.
