Cup price evaluation

by exquisite » Dec 23rd, '10, 06:54

Hi everybody,

I intend to buy this cup for my antiques shelf but I don´t have an approximate standard for its value.
How much would you think it´s worth?

Thanks.

Well, it was clearly not a high quality piece at its time. It also doesn't appear too old. The stamp is not well done, so its going to be pretty hard to authenticate. $50 would be a high price.

There are many scars, hehe, are they done on purpose?

doesn't look like common modern Jingdezhen cups, the Taiwanese cleanse it too isn't it?

old stuff? looks like qing dynasty fen cai or imitation

The "scars" look like they are faults in the production, areas where the glaze is not completely covering. I think it is for domestic use, not an export piece, as it is not marked "CHINA" which was needed to import in to the US after about 1891. Rubber stamps were used in the 1800's, but the foot is completely glazed and rounded, which is not like (older) qing cups.

I'd guess Republic period, 1912- 1920's. Value ... hard to say, depending on where you are in the world you are. As a single cup in a us antique store, probably about $20-30. I cannot read chinese, so what is inscribed on the cup could actually be critical to knowing the date and the value.

Here are some cups I have, showing 18th, 19th and 20th century. Notice how the foot is tall and "square", rather than rounded as the one in your picture.

I can't post them, as it is too big (800 x 300) ????

Tom's assessment seems right to me as an oldest mark. I would, however entertain the possibility it could be much newer. It looks very similar to some 60s/70s/80s low quality/second Imari and this would also explain why it doesn't have the export stamp –I believe the export stamp was dropped in the 70s. The bad stamp, however, is going to make it very difficult to authenticate –even to an expert.
