Has anyone used a Hario drip kettle?

by zicheng » Jan 2nd, '11, 21:17

I found the Hario Buono drip kettle when searching for a basic kettle. It looks like this:

It seems like it would be great for gongfu brewing because of the control made possible by that long spout. It's apparently designed to be used for a type of coffee brewing called a pour over. Here is a YouTube video showing it being used to brew coffee.

I also like the design even though it wouldn't go with any of my other teaware. However, I haven't found anything else better.

I've seen them used, and I've held one in my hand, but haven't used it myself (either for tea or coffee).

Pros:
* Easy to get a thin stream / slow pour, which I generally do like.
* Works on induction or, I believe, standard heat sources.

Cons:
* Since the spout is so thin, and the kettle designed for slow pouring, I think there's a limit to how fast you can pour. This may or may not be a problem, but I prefer to have a kettle with good control of how fast (or slow) I pour.
* Feels kind of lightweight / flimsy in the hand.

If you're not using it to boil water directly, you might cool the water down a little when transferring it to this kettle.

That's a good point about the limit of pouring speed, thanks. I'll probably keep looking. Good kettles are the hardest things to find.
