Rishi tea flower kyusu vs hohin

by msurads06 » Jan 6th, '11, 21:38

ok so i have decided to give greens another chance, i bought a small amount of sencha today and I am thinking about trying out some of the future ottis. Rishi has their 8 oz kyusu on sale for $15. My question is would this be better than the 6 oz hohin (twice the price). Would the kysus work ok for gykoro?

I vote the kyusu, hard to beat the universal usability of a kyusu. And if you ever want to upgrade, you can leave this one at work or at the parents for when you want tea there. I used a kyusu for everything for years before I considered specializing.

TBH, if I was going to get a houjin, it would be smaller.

Start with a kyusu!

Ok, one more question, it looks like the kyusu may be unglazed. I only plan on using it for green tea so would it still be ok as long as i only use it for regular green (not roasted, etc)? but different types (sincha/gykoru?)

Pretty much OK. Maybe after many years the flavors could be a bit muddied. Tokoname is not as porous as most yixing for instance.

However, this resembles one I used for years, constantly (minus the flowers and it had a ball screen). After many years of use, all the teas I brewed in it had this annoying sweet taste that competed with the actual tea being brewed.

So, used to the extreme, you could experience some of this if you brew all your greens in it. Or maybe not.
