Maruta might be the name of a market/shop where the chawan was bought. This looks like a shino chawan. I'm sure one of the resident potters can positively identify what the glaze is.

I'm no pottery expert and certainly no antique pottery expert, but a Google search yielded an overwhelmingly common result:

"Maruta" (in terms of pottery) seems to be connected to "Maruta Munehiko", a very famous Japanese potter of today.

Now I'm not sure if your piece was made by this potter - perhaps it's a replica or indeed, the name of some market - I don't want to lead you on, but it's certainly an interesting scenario. It doesn't really look like the samples of his work that I've seen (just on Google, mind you.)

Is your chawan stamped on the bottom?

Pretty much any chawan that comes in a cardboard box with a sticker like this is going to be semi handmade, or worse.

Again sorry to say it, but that is also true of a huge amount of the chawan you see on many of the various "tea sites" including many with "signed wooden boxes". Japan has a lot of "production" ceramic manufacturers..... although the number has thinned drastically in the past 15 years due to the impact of Chinese imports.

best,
