What's your favorite iced green tea?

by phaus » Feb 4th, '11, 00:08

I have enjoyed green tea for many years but I just recently discovered how good it can be when one uses high quality tea instead of bags from the supermarket. While I plan on trying many green teas hot, so far I seem to only like it when it is cold (except for jasmine pearls which aren't really green).

First I would like to list my current favorite form of iced green tea to start things off. My hope is that many of you decide to also share your favorite types of iced green tea. It doesn't matter if it is inexpensive or more costly, just list your personal favorites. If you feel inclined to do so please be specific and list the following information.

Source (where you bought it from)
Type of green tea
Brewing instructions to include:
amount of tea vs amount of water
brewing temperature
time

Let me thank you in advance for your contributions. While I myself am looking for suggestions on what to try I have noticed that many people new to "real" green tea are confused and are looking for advice on what types of tea to drink. Iced green tea in particular seems harder to find information about.

My current favorite

Moroccan Mint (not very original I know.)
Source = adiago
Type = gunpowder and peppermint
Preparation = 1 tsp gunpowder per 8oz water, 1/3 tsp peppermint per 8oz water.
brew @ 180 for 3 minutes

I love icing chun mee. My favorite Chun Mee's have been from Upton Tea Imports: Chun Mee Dao Ming, and Chun Mee Moon Palace.

When I brew iced tea I typically steep it for the same amount of time, but I brew it concentrated (1 cup or 1/2 cup) and then water it down to make 4-8 cups worth. This saves time and energy to heat the extra water.

Typically though, I don't drink much iced green tea. When I ice proper tea, I ice black tea mostly. And even there, I drink much, much more iced herbal tea than tea. My favorite herbs to use are lemon balm, spearmint, apple mint, and wild bergamot. I also like orange mint and peppermint (sparingly).

I sometimes blend green tea with herbs. Usually I blend it with lemon balm and spearmint. I avoid blending wild bergamot or peppermint with green teas as I find they are very strong and don't blend well with the aroma of most green teas. I find lemon balm blends very smoothly with most green teas, as does spearmint. Orange mint it depends on the tea, I'd say less so but not as much of a mismatch as peppermint.
