Shiboridashi vendors?

by Dogma_i » Feb 17th, '11, 11:59

Picked up one of these in Japan in 1990 without knowing what it was, just for the mingei look and feel. Turns out to be the ideal vessel for Long Jing. (Apologies to all cultural purists out there.) I'd like to get a couple more with variant profiles and filter (i.e., indented lip) designs.

Haven't found a lot of on-line vendors of shiboridashi or houhin, and several of my favorite mid-price Japanese Web retailers seem to have disappeared in the past few years. Can anyone here recommend particular US or Asian retailers? Not looking for the best artisanal ware; more like cheap'n'cheerful.

Thanks-

DM

You cannot go wrong with a shiboridashi by Petr Novak. He makes a number of them in different looks and glazings. LJ is just fine in a shiboridashi.

Petr's shiboridashi do look quite nice!

To be honest, the only other place I have seen shiboridashi on sale (and only one set) is Artistic Nippon:

Tokoname has a ton: http://www.tokoname.or.jp/teapot/gallery.htm. If you don't see what you like, you can always email what you are looking for. They may have something similar or can possibly find it.

Much obliged for the suggestions. The artisticnippon.com and tokoname.or sites were the only two of any size I had found via Google, and had assumed that there must be many more. I will write to both and ask about alternatives.

Thanks again-

I did a quick search on the Japanese Yahoo auction site, and I was surprised at the lack of results... I searched a few months ago and remembered seeing about 5 or 10... this time, I only saw one... the tanuki one I posted awhile back:

It's possible vendors have listed them under other names (like kyuusu), which happens a lot. But of course, searching for kyuusu brings up thousands of hits, so you'd have to go through those....

+1
My shiboridashi by Petr is my go-to piece of travel teaware. I couldn't be happier with it.

Me want, me want. Wonder if anyone makes this kind of craft in the US, or exports it here? That one is wonderful.
