Icing Japanese Greens

by Wesli » Oct 6th, '07, 16:21

So far this term I've been battling through 5 hours with nothing to drink but water. My latest message from xine ( :D ) has reminded that I don't need to suffer through such execrable conditions.
On account of my impatience, love of Japanese tea, and love of experimentation, I have decided to start icing some Japanese greens.
The first part of finding which tastes best iced won't be too difficult (especially if you guys have some good input!). The dilemma I'm faced with is how to package it.

I see a few options:

Method #1: Brew tea in large vesicle with large infuser, then pour first steeping into bottle and refrigerate.
Drawback: I will miss out on my favorite 2nd steeping, as well as any more, essentially wasting tea. I can, of course, dump the first, then take my preferred second, but still, a waste of tea.

Method #2: In order not to waste tea, I could (gasp!) combine steepings (from a small teapot). I have never tried this before, but have been strongly apprehensive about it (thanks in part to MW). It may be worth a try.
Drawbacks: Feeling... a bit... dumb, not enjoying the multiple steep-fun I'm used to.

Method #3: Search and find some small (over 300ml, slightly larger than teapot) water bottles. Fill each bottle with it's corresponding steeping, then drink in sequence, accordingly.
Drawbacks: Finding the damn bottles.

Retrospect:
I feel that method #3 will be the most favorable and advantageous, although finding the right bottle might take some work.
I also just realized (concerning method #3) that after 4 hours, not only will hot tea be luke warm and nasty, but cold tea will be warm and possibly a bit unpleasant as well. Perhaps a lunch box? :D Maybe a small lunch box type thing with ice packs could be a quite simple solution. But what in the world will people think if they see it? ?

I doubt the intra-steep differences will be as noticeable when iced, so you might as well just combine them, IMO. I've been known to combine infusions of hot tea when I'm just drinking it casually, and at the risk of sounding heretical, it's still enjoyable. :)

Wait, wait...are we espousing Mocha's method here?

It's hard to find 300 ml bottles. 350 ml is only a couple tenths of an ounce away from 12 oz, though...and there's plenty of those. I'm kinda diggin' the Nalgene flask myself...wonder if I'm cool enough (or dorky enough) to get away with it...
