I could take them or leave them. Not important.

They seem purely ceremonial, even to my tea-noob eyes.

I've noticed I can probably duplicate the experience with porcelain gong fu cups.

However, I love the look of a nice, white gong fu cup with a matching aroma cup. So I'll bite and add a pair to my collection. Just ordered from Hou De. Interestingly enough, everyone else I've tried is fresh out of 'em!

Where did he say that? So aroma cups are for people who don't really appreciate or understand tea then?

They are cups that you use to smell the tea you are drinking...whether or not you see it as tool in 'tea ceremony' is up to you...but just know there are a lot of people who use them for 'everyday' causal drinking.

You are correct, I did not say that, I believe Chasm said something similar.

I use them when I simply feel like doing so, and want to maximize the aroma experience.

It is simply another way to experience TEA.

The crack about messing with your friends was me. I didn't say it was the only use, just that it can be fun.

Of course, I only deliberately mess with friends who I know will be polite but blunt about what they enjoy or don't enjoy, not on someone I think may feel compelled to politely express enjoyment of everything.

That is actually one advantage to hauling out options you may not use yourself every day; if you're trying to find out the nature of a non-tea-geek's tea palate, these things can be helpful.

I didn't really mean that they're not for people who don't appreciate or understand tea, didn't say that at all really was just noting how I don't much use them when it's just me.

Though I didn't mean to put words in Chip's mouth(got the 'ch' names confused). My bad there.
