Chinese Glass Water Kettle: tea full of glass shards.

Has anyone found their kettle full of tiny glass pieces?

Finally the sun is out. It illuminated my Yama Northwest Glass 40-Ounce Chinese Glass Water Kettle Tea Pot revealing a billowing snowflake winter scene of minute floating glass particles. This kettle has been in use for the past month.

Has anyone experienced this? It seems a number of TC'ers use this same kettle.

Additionally the pot has developed a very small crack.


I have been heating it on a Waring Pro burner. I have used the included metal wire. It seems that was not really needed. But I do not think that would have contributed to this problem.

A wire grid is included for electric elements and not necessary for glass or solid cook tops.

Any input is greatly appreciated. It really made for an uncomfortable end to the tea session.

What makes you think they are glass particles and not minerals? Have you tried straining them out to examine?

I can't make any comment about that particular kettle, but I've used Yama glass products for many years, and the only time they've broken is when I knocked or smashed them myself.

A.The water came out of my 'fridge filter.

B.Minerals do not sparkle like ice crystals!

I am going to decant them and take a look under the 'scope.

I'm 100% sure those are minerals. Let me guess -- this happens after you boil your water, correct? That is, when you pour the water in the kettle, it looks clear?

It's definitely minerals. Buy a bottle of distilled water and you won't see this problem.

+1 this same thing happened to me every time i went to Wisteria teahouse in Taibei, where they used spring water trucked in from Puli. I have seen it on occasion using bottled spring waters in California, too.

MarshalN made the correct call that the metal wire included with the Waring is not needed with this setup.

BTW, I really enjoy this for focused sessions like multiple pu brews. The plate retains heat quite well and keeps the water at a steady temperature. Yardley has written much more eloquently on the topic already.

How many of you all use various water heating methods? Each makes for a very different experience.
