Unusual Teapot Identification Help!

by night.owl » May 19th, '11, 11:39

I was wondering if anyone has ever seen a teapot like this, and if so, could give me some information on it. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

It has a hollow handle with a hole in it, and it's own little lid. I'm guessing the hollow cavity in the handle (and around the outer wall of the pot) is to keep the tea hot, if filled with hot water? I'm not sure what kind of clay it is. It holds about 4 ounces. It's rather heavy, but it's a double wall. It's got a slow pour, and a finger over the lid hole stops it perfectly. The pot also came with a small tray, and a set of four tiny cups with their own tray.

Bizarre. That removable elephant head is most curious.

Sorry, I wouldn't know a thing about it.

Yes, it IS bizarre, I've never seen another one like it! I live in a community with a heavy Asian population, so the thrift stores around turn up the occasional treasure or two. I've found a few older Yixing pots as well, so now I'm addicted. But this one really has me stumped.

You know what, I better experiment on that one. I should revise that to say it goes around to the pour spout on both sides. I'll post again shortly.

I tried to pour water in at an angle, then tilt it and dump it out the other side, but it's hard to tell whether it's going all the way around, or just dribbling back out the same side.

Maybe its to keep a teapot warm when you brew outside in the cold?

I knew it reminded me of something creepy from my childhood. Those weird elephants from Dumbo's nightmare!

I think you put the frozen margarita in the main chamber, and the shooter of rum in the handle! (I hope we find out the real answer. I've been curious about this since you posted in the Yixing Showoff Thread.)
