Pour a vinegar solution or for really bad scale straight up. Let it soak a while and then pour away. Rinse several times.

If you have a semi stiff brush that was not used for food, you can also use this with some of the vinegar still inside.

This depends on how much scale you have built up. And how much vinegar you use as well as the vinegar to water concentration. At least 30 minutes, this allows the vinegar to react with the scale w/o much scrubbing, longer if needed.

I have very hard water in my area...I fill my kettle with 5% vinegar solution (right from the jug) boil it then empty the kettle. This eliminates the the scale quickly. Then to get rid of the vinegar smell I fill the kettle with water, boil it and dump out the water and repeat until the smell is gone (usually 2 or 3 rinse cycles)

I just pour plain white vinegar in my kettle just an inch or so of it. Then I press the button to boil. Pour out the vinegar, rinse a couple times and it works great for me. I don't bother with a vinegar water solution because the scale i get is very severe.

I am not positive, but I think Cuisinart sells a solution that is supposed to work very well. :D
