I saw that on the can too.... but from the comments I assumed it was likely re-filled with real stuff.

Thanks for the links Dave. And for testing the Kashew for allergic reactions for me .... now I know.

I've spent some time visiting a good friend's friend who is a major Tsugaru lacquer artist and watching techniques. Lacquer fascinates me.......... but if we think clay work demands patience.... the lacquer process on wood makes ceramics look absolutely instantaneous .

I am hoping to do some non-round lids in lacquer for some mizusashi. So Kashew was going to be the choice since it is easy to get here in the States.

But so much for not having to worry about "the itchies".

The oil in cashew (urushiol) is the same oil found in poison ivy/oak.

Depending on what part of the cashew they use to make the lacquer, it will contain the irritant, and I don't think there's any way around it...

It might be interesting to try whether this gold paste will work w/ JB Weld. That one website doesn't look like it ships to the US, but I will hunt around more this afternoon.

I "finished" reassembling the jar this morning. I knew it wasn't going to be pretty... and it's not.



Some of the breaks were still quite clean and fit together really well. Other pieces had obviously experienced a lot of further friction in transit and had worn smooth(er), which not only make it harder to piece together, but further broke off small pieces.

I was only missing one "large" piece (not shown). But all of these things combined to the fact that I got *slightly* off, and a sizeable crack propagated up to the top. The lid just barely does *not* fit... although the lid broke into 5 pieces, it pieced back together extremely well... maybe I should have been less precise!

Anyway, the JB Weld worked very well, and it feels quite solid, as I can lift it up without concern that it will fall apart. It's certainly not pretty. Once I fill up my other jars, I'll probably still use this jar for storage.

All in all, an interesting experience! And one I hope not to repeat!

All things considered, it does not look that bad. You did a really good job keeping the shape pretty uniform, possibly the hardest part.

Thanks, Chip, I knew not to expect miracles, so the outcome pretty much matches my expectation. It may not be waterproof, but it is tuo-proof!

I used probably 80% of the JB Weld tubes, to give everybody an idea of how much 'welding' it required.
