Hi, I'm new to the tea world.
My dad brought from China about 2 years ago a strange looking tea mug that I now know to be a yixing mug (with a lid and all). Are there any special ways to prepare teas with it? Do you recommend using it?
I hope I can use it, I'm not a big fan of (useless) decorative ornements.

Hi there!
Any chance you can post a pic of this Yixing mug? Would love to see it. Does it have a lid and saucer?

Sadly it's at my home and I won't be able to get to it for about 2 weeks (I'm in a college dorm in an other city)
But here is a pic that looks alot like it :
Mine's color is a bit darker with chinese characters written on it.

You can stick an infuser cup in it and make tea that way.

No problem. One thing you need to know about yixing is that it is a very porous clay, and absorbs many flavors from the tea you brew in it. So naturally, you don't want to be mixing of the flavors of a variety of teas. For this reason, yixing must be dedicated to a very small spectrum of teas. Mine (from the images above), I have dedicated to jade oolongs, or lightly oxidized oolongs.
For this reason I also have a glass infuser that I use to brew the whole spectrum of teas:

Thanks for posting the pic. The Adagio stainless infuser is 3 5/8" tall x 2 3/8" diameter on the bottom. The top lip is a bit wider.
Fukamushi is right. It should be dedicated to a very small spectrum of teas....and certainly no flavored teas.
