My chasen is a cheapie Chinese one and it hasn't cracked yet...despite the humidity being low enough to cause my skin to crack.

I have/had quite a few bamboo teaware items but the only ones that have cracked are actually those who have come in contact with water.

Contact with water is unavoidable for me, if i don't wash it fully time to time, mold on inner side can appear. At least during hot and humid season. Didn't expect this can lead to more damage in dry air.

No, your spelling is fine. Crack is a word with multiple definitions as are most English words.

In this case, your chasen does indeed have a crack. And you want to know how to prevent cracks in Chasen-s.

However crack is also a terrible illegal drug, and we often say something like "how to protect children from crack" ... or any illegal drug and/or harmful substance.

So, each time I saw this topic's title, I thought of the alternate meaning.

And now back to the actual topic!

So, I took a look at the only 3 chasen I have ever purchased or received as a gift.

I am always amazed reading topics like this one (and there have been more than a few mentions of cracked chasen). These 3 are in virtually perfect condition.

No cracks, no mold, not even any broken tines.

I guess the TeaCave has perfect climate for chasen ...

I do store the "active" one on a ceramic keeper and I always dip the chasen almost to the handle in warm to hot water minutes before use ... just a quick dip and swirl.

must be either quality of bamboo or the air. Mine is less than a week old and already has a crack in it too. I figure.. as long as it still works, I'm good.

Whew! The very thought of plastic or metal chasen and chashaku makes my stomach quake. And, as mentioned, scratches and perhaps other damage to pottery chawan. . . Perhaps plastic and/or stainless steel chawan would be next? Horrors!

Yep, all you really have to do is maintain an average annual relative humidity of 65%. Your chasen (and teatables, and guitars and ukes,) won't crack.

Japan, Hawaii and... NW Oregon. Perfect year-round humidity for all your precious wood and bamboo articles. My only complaint is that even though things don't crack, my cheaper paulonia wood box lids warp in the damp if they aren't stacked with a tiny bit of weight.

I have a guitar here that has never had a humidifier in case or out, it is 35 years old, no cracking or warping. My ukes stay perfect too.
