Which Yixing Factory is this?

by Herb_Master » Mar 20th, '12, 19:53

My last few visits to Malaysia I have been highly delighted with my purchases.

This year I bought 2 yixing pots - and I am not convinced that I bought wisely.

In Penang I went to visit William Ma, but sadly he was in China on a buying trip. The salesman in his shop was extremely pleasant and spoke good english but his knowledge of the products was somewhat less than William's.

I bought more of my favourite Yan Cha, and having previously purchased a great Yixing, I wanted to buy another.

Inside the shop I was tempted by this exquisite Hexagonal Qing Hui Ni. I should maybe have been warned off when he said it was wholly hand made, I retorted it was not and probably only half hand made, William's mother confirmed it was only half handmade.

The sticker on the outside, the salesman told me, showed it was from the most sought after Factory.

I was under pressure from my fellow vacationers to leave the shop, so made the purchase.

Away from the shop the greyness of the clay seems too homogenously perfect, the seamlessness inside makes me doubt if it is really half handmade.

But it is nice to use anyway :)

With all respect..

take a look at the history of Factory-1 sticker http://big5.cnfol.com/big5/blog.cnfol.c ... 71001.html

says it's called Fang Yuan Pai and was used during late-80's~early-90's. But if you compare to the link above..a portion of letters is not very much correct, no matter gold-seal or white-seal. Different looking of sticker from government-owned factory is unlikely, correct me if I'm wrong..

It was not supposed to be old, 2011 production. $60

When factory 1 ceased to be as it was, did any new smaller factories inherit any of the original logos?

It's very misleading if you ask a modern yixing which factory it's from. There are no more factory 1, but small studios inside the building which run by craftsmen. Just my 2 cents

The sticker is from the 90s, IIRC, so not really relevant. It looks like it's something that got peeled off and re-stuck on some other pot though.
