Re: what is a Kenyou Hishaku?
A 'kenyou' hishaku is just a multi-purpose hishaku, which can be used for both furo and ro seasons; as the name suggests, 'kenyou' 兼用, meaning multi-use or multi-purpose. The shape is pretty much the same as both of the other styles of hishaku.

Hi blairswhitaker, blairswhitaker wrote:Thanks Robie, do you know what kind of cut the end of the handle has?
Regarding the kenyou hishaku, I've found some more info from my chanoyu teacher. He told me that the size of the kenyou hishaku is between the "ro" and "furo" hiskaku, and that the tip of the handle is cut straight down, rather than angled one way or the other. Having said that, you can cut an angle into the kenyou hishaku, but then you end up with only one style or the other. Otherwise, just leave it as is for both seasons.
In our tea school (Ueda Soko Ryu - Hiroshima), we would only use the kenyou hishaku for the "furo" season, and never for the "ro" season, as our school uses a much bigger hishaku for the "ro" season than other tea schools.
Hope this helps,
Cheers

If you look on Ebay, Item number (#290710334604) is a good example of a kenyou hishaku.
