1997 Menghai 7542?

Hi Tea Chatters,

My question is did Menghai Tea Factory put out two different wrappers for their 7542 in 1997 ?

The reason I am asking this question is, because on two different sites I see 1997 Menghai Tea Factory 7542. Both have different wrappers.

I was talking with Mr. Fung and he said the 97 green cake is Menghai Tea Factory. Also The Chinese Tea Shop sites states on there website that their 1997 is Menghai Tea Factory. Definitely a little confusing

I can't say for sure, but I will say that I've seen vendors selling recipe cakes from Menghai factory from those years (late 90s) with all sorts of label variations. I wouldn't really spend a ton of time / energy trying to figure out if they're all actually produced by Menghai / Dayi, or if they're the exact recipe the vendor claims. If the tea tastes good, buy it. If not, don't.

But to answer your question, I believe there is an orange "cha" 7542 from that time period; I can't say whether this particular one looks good or not. If not, it could be 7532, which definitely has an orange "cha" version (see "orange-in-orange", which also has the orange neifei). Given the price and the fact that the one on Daniel's shop does seem to have an orange neifei, I wonder if this might be 7532, not 7542.

I believe that Essence of Tea also used to sell a Menghai orange mark from this period, or maybe it was Houde.

I own the 97 orange mark from thechineseteashop. And am of the opinion that it is a 7532. Because that is what it tastes like ,and the bud ratio on the cake seems more like a 7532. Plus the orange in orange 7532 was produced in 97 as well. This tea has both orange wrapper and neifi. I think he might have labeled it as a 7542 as that is a more famous recipe. Idk

Im sure there is probably more than one kind of wrapper for a 7542 in 97. I believe the shui LAN yin was produced in 97 as well .

wyardley, Thanks for the reply. Yes, I know he was referring to the puerh being raw ,not the green mark on the wrapper.

One shop that I've bought from in the past has recipe / label combinations that I've never heard of / seen in books. However, I'm not one to say that just because I haven't heard of something it doesn't exist. You have to have a healthy dose of skepticism, but like I said above... if the tea tastes good, who cares.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the mid-late 90s is when privatization and special orders started to ramp up more, and so that time period is especially confusing.

The Orange from Chinese Tea Shop tastes more like 7532 than 7542 to me. This is fortunate, because most of the puer I sampled there taste like unmitigated funk.
