Yixing clay name translations... one word or two?

As someone who doesn't know enough about the Chinese language as he should by now
...
When speaking of different types of clays, it is better to keep it as one word (ex: hongni) or to split it in to two (ex: hong ni), or does it matter?
Hoping the Chinese speakers can settle this for me once and for all. Thanks!
