Identification of a couple of cakes

by wert » Aug 29th, '13, 03:47

Hello everyone!

I have a few different cakes in storage but I have little idea about their quality and history. I am hoping someone who is well informed would be able to tell me more about them. Let's go with the first 2 cakes.

No idea why I can't post photos or url but here is the dropbox link

These two are shu (cooked) puerh. The first one made by a company called Puxiu - not exactly well known, but mysteriously really expensive on Taobao. Nevertheless, anyone paying those kinds of money (hundreds of RMB a cake) for this thing need to have their head examined.

The second is supposedly from the Yunnan Agriculture University. Also a shu.... I'm not sure I'd drink it even if it's free.

Sorry, not trying to be harsh, but it is what it is.

No offence at all! I have no illusions about what I have. I can read the labels but still any background would be nice. I think these and a few more are bought by dad in yunan as tourist. He know next to nothing about tea so I can't really expect much and I am pretty sure he did not pay much for them.

Yes, both are shu pu er. I had almost finished one of the 2nd cake, it wasn't that bad....rather mellow.

There's probably no more information to be had there. Neither of these outfits are by any imagination famous or anything.

The first one is made by pu xiu, which is generally a good factory. It was one of the four large puerh factories from planned economy era (somehow everybody knows the other three but this one is not as well known). But shu is always a gamble. :P

I suppose students would have to press cakes as class projects?

I am just curious and a little worried that I can't find images or other references to these two cakes. Not even the year.

For the other cakes, I can find other examples by just google.

You have only 2 cakes. Why worry? If they are good you drink them , if not , just use them for seasoning new pots.
