I have some doubts...

by stockman » Nov 26th, '14, 18:05

Hi,

I buy every year 250-500gr of green tea to have enough for all the year, but I have read that green tea start loosing its properties around the third month after being collected, so my question is, if I buy green tea for all the year, when I drink it at the end of the year, that tea doesn't have the same properties than the tea I have drunk before?

PS: sorry for my english, my level isn't very high but I'm trying to improve it.

regards

I don't know the technical terms, but green tea will loses its freshness. I think more than a month after being opened, in particular if you open it frequently, introduces air and speeds up the loss of freshness.

If it's opened it will degrade in that time but if it's packaged properly (vacuum sealed, nitrogen flushed, airtight bag) it should be fine to store it for a year sealed. I've certainly done this with sencha.

Green tea is best within 3-month consumption, and ok for 6 months ~ a year if storing right. And be prepared to buy shincha next year. 8)

I would say that it mostly depends from where you live; in a city like Las Vegas your green teas will maintain the freshness for a longer time that in a city like Hong Kong.

How you store you teas is another factor; a mylar bag with (good) zip lock or a double lidded jar are good options, better hard materials like tin, porcelain, silver and so on.

Regards.

So, it would be better to buy it in 50gr packs than 250 to keep it fresh?

I will do it like that this year.

thank you very much

That would work better for sure. When you open the 50g packs and use them for the first time, pour the remainder into a tea tin (or similar) and then open that when needed as you make your tea. Then pour the next 50g pack into the tin when the first one is empty...and so on.
