From Amazon reviews, some of the brown betties made in England recently have been having problems like the glaze flaking off and cracks causing pieces of the pot to fall off.rdl wrote:entropyembrace.entropyembrace wrote: About brown betty they're supposedly not very good quality anymore and you should probably avoid them...
For years I've seen nothing written about the Brown Betty so I am curious, although not surprised, about your comment and wonder where that information comes from. It seems the trend is for traditional British companies to manufacture in Asia, but if the BB can hold on that would be a plus for traditionalists. If there is anything to read I would appreciate to know.
Sorry to go off thread a bit....

Thank you - but sad to hear. Especially in light of the OP's other post about the demise of tea pot use in GB.entropyembrace wrote:From Amazon reviews, some of the brown betties made in England recently have been having problems like the glaze flaking off and cracks causing pieces of the pot to fall off.rdl wrote:entropyembrace.entropyembrace wrote: About brown betty they're supposedly not very good quality anymore and you should probably avoid them...

Re: Brown Betty and Infuser
I'm UK born and bred and can tell you that the teapot is very much alive and well in nearly everyone's home I know. They are all stuffed full of teabags but that's beside the point
Brown betties are of crap quality now and to be avoided, you can get good vintage ones on eBay in the UK though. However for black tea I'd highly recommend fine/bone china. I drink mostly black english blend or assam and fine porcelain is by far the best.

Alex,
I am happy you chimed in, but sorry you confirmed entropyembrace's post. Do you have an idea when the quality dropped? How old is vintage to find one when they were made well? But I am also curious - I use a fine china pot, but that's after I pour off the tea and serve it. I don't pour the boiling water into it. I have a decade old (that's why I ask) Brown Betty, but have always used a more robust ceramic teapot to steep my tea in.
Thanks for the new information.

I'm sorry I can't give more insight in to the brown betty drop off. They use the same mold but the clay is very poor. Bubbles etc and pieces just falling away. Regarding vintage I've seen some really old ones on eBay but can't give any clues about how to spot them. Apart from them just looking really old

My mum's got an insane one. its like 20 pints with a front handle....its like the chain gun from predator.
I think the really old original unglazed ones are Sadler made.
The unglazed one's dont come up much but these ones by Sadler do. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-SADLE ... rkt%3D4%26
Not brown betty related
Since it was shown in Sherlock Holmes I've seen this set quite a few times in various houses
