Duanni with Shou Pu
What kind of effect does an aged duanni teapot have on a shou pu? I’m very curious how different clay have certain effects on certain teas. For me, I want my pu erh to be very smooth. Anyone can offer any insights?

Good duanni should take the edge off certain teas and smooth them out. This can work for and against a tea. Bitter, funky, and harsh Puerh can usually benefit by being brewed in duanni. You just need to try and see if the combination suits you.

Not all duan ni is the same. Clay quality, porosity, firing level, wall thickness, etc. will all have an effect. Ive seen very thin walled, high fired duan ni pots that can handle greener TGY or gao shan just fine, and I've seen more porous duan ni pots that have a huge rounding effect and would even round shou too much.
FWIW, out of the 40 Yixing pots I have I only use one duan ni pot, and I use it on an aged liu an that has some slightly off storage notes that I want to hide. I think most duan ni on the market is suited to rounding off flavors and aromas and smoothing mouth feel. In my opinion, if my shou needs that much rounding, time to buy better shou.
