Hello Teachatters
argh, just bought my first chawan and it cracked right of the bet when I preheated the thing with just off boiling water. Here is the fracture: https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/1093 ... 7104908213
The crack is pretty much all the way down and it leaks when I add even a little bit of water.
Does any of you have any idea on how to fix it so it doesn't leak anymore? I would love to use it as it took me quite some time to find a chawan that fitted my needs and looked good.
Thanks.

For me kintsugi is the nicest way to repair and it even adds some character to an object. In your case it won't be a lot of work. Maybe there is somebody near you who is able to do kintsugi.

here's a cheap way to do it yourself! with your chawan I would use silver (gintsugi) - more aestetically appealing, in my opinion
hope it helps!

I saw this kit about a year ago even though I think back then it wasn't food-safe. Can't find any information about this fact now.

The heck with kintsugi work, I'd be looking at returning the Chawan for a new one or a refund. That SHOULD not happen.
If the piece was already cracked by shipping damage and you didn't notice it... that would be one thing. But if you are SURE that it was intact when the hot water went in and then let go from that action...... that is NOT what any clay piece should do.

I'm now in a conversation with the shopkeeper. He will refund or replace. The piece is however one of a kind. So he is asking the artist to remake one. But it might take some time, so repairing it for short us would be nice. I been looking for food grade waterresistent glues, but it's hard to find something that qualifies.

Two reasons to not fix it- first, it's a fault and you should get recompense, second- I have seen this happen before, and there is a very good chance that it will continue.
Put a lot of effort into fixing it, and next time it sees boiling water it may continue to rip in half anyway.
