Hojo: new Akitsu Mumyoi wares up (new clay)

from my take on what he's said, it sounds like his new clays keep getting better and better.

i guess the akitsu oxidation increases body more than any other clay in his lineup.
carbonized reduction increases body as well (to a lesser extent) while also strongly increasing aftertaste.

it would be cool if he tried to make a table of effect on body and aftertaste relative to each each clay type.

Looks good, feels good but my budget for buying teapot is no good. Don't need to resist when I don't have budget to buy new pot. That is the best part.

Don't think better but instead different!

All his clays are great in their own way. Its just like audiophile headphones in that once you get to the mid-high range, all new stuff gets you is a different signature. Same with these clays. They are all great and all offer a different signature. I find once you get use to one of the clays its signature disappears as your palette tunes in to the tea more and its only once you switch that it becomes obvious again.

In fact I've seen an article he wrote in which he compared his clays to camera lenses. In which they can highly different things. My advice in buying a pot is go for a shape and size that suits. If its for Sencha then I've found all the clays great and none stand out. I like to switch clays sometimes purely as I find you get use to a clays profile/signature and it can make a tea stand out more by mixing it up. Take my opinion with a grain of salt. I know very little apart from my own limited experience.

Did you order one of these tea pots? If so what are your thoughts? I'm looking at the Akitsu Mumyoi oxidation teapot for use with either black/red, roasted oolongs, or sheng.

I ordered a hohin. Not here yet. Will report back. I have tried the clay though. It's very good. It turns up the taste with very little muting. For sencha it makes a very alive cup! Really good clay, deep taste but also very crisp at the same time. I could see it being a great match for black teas.

Great to hear - this is what I was hoping for and Akira Hojo suggested to me this would be true. I am waiting for a flatter pot with wider opening to become available in 100ml. I may just get the dragon egg one if I become impatient.

i think the clay is nice. due to my piece's small size, i use it for gyo a fair amount, but i have tried it with some chinese black teas and it has bee nice for that as well.

a comment on design that i made to Akira:

If I were to critique
the form of this Tozo hohin from a functional perspective, I would
say that it could benefit from a taller and/or thinner rim to better
insulate my fingers from the heat. I find that it can get kind of
hot, and I sometimes need to stop mid-pour to let my finger tips cool
down. This is especially true if I use it with other teas besides
gyokuro which I brew at higher water temperatures.

it's probably not due to my feedback, but perhaps Watanabe-san noticed this himself and adjusted the design in subsequent productions.



that lip is much more exaggerated. it looks hard to burn your fingers on.

Alix: Shimizu Ken is no longer making new teaware. I don't believe he ever made any Akitsu Mumyoi kyusu, only with the regular "Mumyoi" clay.

Tozo make good akitsu kyusu but I don't like the disegn/form of kyusu of Tozo
