How is Matcha made for guests?

by beforewisdom » Aug 5th, '16, 19:11

A friend of mine went to Japan a few months back and brought me back two expensive tins of matcha.

I was thinking of getting a gift for her and her husband the next time I go over there. I was thinking of buying her 4 glass matcha bowls, a brush, and a bamboo spoon. It occurred to me that I didn't know how matcha was made for guests/multiple people.

Is it made one bowl at a time, or in one big bowl and then poured into the bowls of the guests?

Thanks you.

During the Japanese tea ceremony, in which matcha is served as a part of a small gathering of people, the host usually prepares matcha in one chawan, and the guests share (drinking from the same bowl).

The good news, however, is that you can make matcha however you want to, so getting 4 bowls is fine (though I'm not sure I've ever seen glass chawan).
