Re-Purposing Yixing - Worth it in my case?

by Noonie » Nov 20th, '16, 06:58

I have one yixing pot that I've used exclusively with Rou Gui. A few years ago when I got the pot I tried this tea and liked it, so I paired them and since then I've drank this tea on weekends or around dinner. When I'm finished with my current stash of this tea I don't think I'm going to buy it again. Wondering if I should clean/releasing the pot for one of my other teas, as I'm j To sure it's better than gaiwan.

I mainly drink green tea (sencha and matcha), and high mountain oolong (lightly oxidized). On occasion I drink Dan Cong. I don't think these would pair well in a yixing, as I do not want to soften these already soft flavours.

Thoughts?

FYI it's a less than $100 yixing...so no factory 1 or similar appeal.

Have you tried testing the pot by adding boiling water, letting it sit for several hours, and tasting the water compared with water from a glass? Not sure why you will no longer order this tea? whatever aroma or taste you no longer enjoy, it shouldn't come through in the resulting water. If the taste comes through, you can reset with a very low 30 minute simmer, using a trivet or cloth in the pot to protect the pot. Sometimes it takes a few try's to reset.
By the way, I use Yixing for light oxidized oolongs with great results. You might compare using this pot and porcelain simultaneously, to see if you like the results.

Often people think their yixing pots are more deeply seasoned or as you state "set" than the pots actually are. I suggest that before you work to rid the pot of seasoning (real or imagined) that you use it as is for various teas. You may find that you are satisfied w/ results for one or more of teas that you like w/o the bother of cleaning the pot.

I agree with ethan; try it with the teas you want to drink and see if you like the way it performs. No need to reseason. Do you have a pic of the pot?

It's not that something tastes off, rather my preference is for lighter teas. I will try a side-by-side with the yixing and a Gaiwan and some high mountain oolong. i don't have a photo of the pot. It was about $60 and I got it from a reputable tea vendor in Toronto...not hand made, but decent for me.

Trying it side by side with a gaiwan is a good idea. Enjoy!
