Xiaguan tuocha

One of the intentionally aged teas, Pu-Erh has a loyal following.

Xiaguan tuocha

Real tanks as I know them. Got several of these, my favourite is the Gold Ribbon.

But this thing hasn't changed in 7 years (purchased the year 2007 in 2011). I also have y. 2003 but haven't tried the thing yet. Anyway, it has got all the punch of a classic Xiaguan tuo but no signs of ageing despite of me living in a subtropical climate. And it doesn't seem to give up since I'm brewing some now. Puer on roids!

What is your personal experience with them?

Cheers ;)

I got mine from 2014 and it ages exceptionally well. I just brewed some last week. In fact it's almost finished :(

It's easier to see the flavour change more in the first few years though. As it gets older, there's a diminishing change in flavour. What also might be a problem is that yours is from 2007, which isn't a good year for pu erh. The market at that time was flushed with not so good quality. I'm not sure if this affected brands like Xiaguan as well. Your 2003 one should be good.

The other thing with Xiaguan is that the tea leaves are fairly intensively processed drawing out a lot of aroma. This makes them good to drink in quite early stages, but maybe this reduces the potential of long-term aging.

I never said the tuo was so-so. It's actually good but the 'problem' is that it is as strong as day one.

I'll leave the 2003 for when I'm on my deathbed. ;)

Traditional storage works a treat on XG tuos! I have a few hundred aging away (HK dry storage) and they are definitely going to take a decade or more to mellow!

Most definitely. Do expect a long wait. I’ve got a bunch of late 90s MengHai raw tuocha which have recently just started to open up and mellow down... that’s almost 2 decades... 🤣🤣
