Fine clay with shiny texture, is that yixing zisha?

by DailyTX » Aug 5th, '18, 18:01

Hello everyone,

I recently acquired a tea set labeled as purple clay tea set. Upon examine the teapot, I noticed the clay is super fine and the teapot has no sign of use yet has a shine to it. Inside this teapot, I did not see tool marks. Anyone know if this one of those slip cast teapots? The cups are clearly slip cast with identical mark labeled Yixing in simplify Chinese. And the Coasters also have identical mark labeled Zhong Guo Yixing in traditional Chinese.

Hi, it looks to me like a slip cast. It is probably why it's shiny because they have to use very fine clay to mix with water for the slip casting. You can see the seam line going from the handle and continue on to the body. Some half handmade pots where they used a mold for the handles and spouts will sometimes show the seams. But most of the time, the seams will not be perfectly centered on the spout/handle and the seam usually does not continue on to the body.
