Interesting, but not too convinced. More original source data would be needed for me to buy into this.

But I do not downplay the marketing power of Lipton. In China, it is trendy for youth to use Lipton bags...go figure. So, anything is possible.

A related discussion was taking place days ago on GTF. But there someone was making incoherent suppositions based on similar data...that the Japanese are consuming massive quantities on China produced sencha products.

Kevin shared that most green tea imported from China to Japan are for export to less knowledgable countries because they are sooo much cheaper...buyer beware!!! Just because a vendor claims their sencha was imported from Japan, does not guarantee it is produced in Japan.

Another tiny bit of info on black tea in Japan from an RFDT post. I have no idea if the poster knows what she is talking about, but she sounds confident at least!

Actually, there are many teahouses in Japan that don't even carry
Japanese green tea. They wouldn't serve much of it, since it is
regarded as the tea "people have at home". Many Japanese like to go out
and they like to try something less ordinary.
Darjeeling teas seem to be popular because the name is familiar and
famous, but many people actually don't like it when they try it. It is
usually too week and most prefer the stronger blacks from Ceylon or
Assam...
