i've been doing a teaspoon or two teaspoons for 8oz. a tablespoon/tablespoon and a half seems like a lot for 6oz of water

Gyokuro: 1g/oz if you like it light, I go with 9g/4oz for a more concentrated taste.
Sencha: from 4-5g/6oz to 8-10gr/6oz, depending on the nature of the sencha (deep steamed or light steamed).

I guess you should experiment and find the right amount of leaves according to your taste.
The more leave you use, the shorter the brewing time.
