How to heat a silver tea kettle

by trent » May 21st, '08, 01:13

I just got (found) a silver tea kettle, and I have heard that these kettles do not withstand direct heat.

So... how do I heat it?

I don't think its necessarily direct heat, but more-so a direct flame that silver kettles don't like. Don't use it on a gas stove that uses an actual flame, no alcohol burners, just no open flames at all.

If you have a gas stove you could probably protect the kettle by placing a skillet or even a heavy pie pan (not the disposable kind) on the burner and the kettle on the skillet/pan. It would take a little longer to heat but you wouldn't have the problem of accidentally letting the flame hit the silver

A heat diffuser would probably work pretty well, too - especially if the stove element is kept on low heat.
