I agree. After seeing people talk in the IM about how the Japanese incense is more subtle than other incense, I decided to try some. I purchased two 50 stick boxes, one of Green Tea and one of White Plum, both from Nippon Kodo. I love both of the scents and find that they are very relaxing.

Japanese incense is fantastic, especially the aloeswood-based blends.

My favourite incense maker is Baieido, although Shoyeido and Nippon Kodo are both very good. Kyukyodo is also excellent!

Incidentally, I nominate Olfactory Rescue Service as very possibly the best incense blog in existence - and it's very Japanese-heavy! Mike's wonderful incense reviews previously appeared under his older blog, Mike's Prattle.

There's also some wonderful incense discussion from time to time on a Yahoo!group called Alice's Restaurant. The group owner, David Oller, is the Baieido representative for North America and he is a treasure-house of information on Japanese incense.

This group is particularly recommended if you are interested in Koudou, the Japanese incense ceremony (or merely in learning that method in "listening" to aloeswood).

Incidentally, David is going to be doing a koudou demonstration in New York City on August 23, so if anyone out there wants to learn all about it, this is your big chance! {lucky creatures}
