Solodays,
Welcome to Teachat!
That my friend is the million dollar question! It really all depends on what kind of tea you'll be brewing. For blacks, I use ceramic or glass. Greens most people around here use Kyusu (side handled Japanese pots) or a Chinese Gaiwan (lidded bowl).
Gaiwan are extremely versatile and small so they are perfect for just a cup or two. If you are new to tea, I'd suggest goin with a glass pot or the Ingenuitea from Adagio. Get a starter set and find out what you like, then go from there.
Good luck on your Teajourney!

Unglazed clay Kyusu for Japanese tea, preferably from the Tokoname region of Japan.
Taiwanese clay pots or porcelain gaiwan for Chinese and Taiwanese teas. Someone already suggested starting with glass or porcelain until you know which direction you want to go. This IMO is good advice for non-Japanese teas. There's a lot of truth to "different pots are better for different teas" so this helps reduce the variables.
If you choose clay for Chinese teas, this pot is available from The Fragrant Leaf for $25. It is the first pot that I purchased for non-Japanese teas, and it got me off to a good start.

Re: what is the best type of teapot for brewing tea?
I agree with Fence. If you want something to control heat and steaping time than I would go with a Gaiwan.Solodays wrote:Is there such thing as BEST type of teapots for brewing tea?

Gaiwans are very different from porcelain pots, they are lidded cups or bowls. The lid is used as the filter by offsetting it so there is a little gap with the cup, tea is poured through this gap into a cup/pitcher/open mouth. I got mine from funalliance, but there are many other gaiwan sources listed here http://www.teachat.com/viewtopic.php?t=5657elchai wrote:I use a glass pot for everything because its all I have. Where do you buy a gaiwan? Is this like the porcelain pot that Adagio sells?
