Hi
A couple of days ago I ordered some tea storage tins from a company here in the UK and just put of curiosity I also ordered a couple of bags of this sencha by Uji no Tsuyu
http://www.japancentre.com/?cmd=itm&cid=369&id=2381 I thought I would get the gold label stuff as it claims to be the best quality one in the range.
I Just wondered if anyone had tried it and had any comment, it's fairly cheap and I obviously don't expect it to be on par with any of the O-cha sencha I have been drinking, should be alright for iced tea at least!

I can't say that I've tried it before, but from the looks of it, I guess that it would probably be ok stuff. I wouldn't expect anything spectacular out of it, just an average sencha. Sounds like that's what you're expecting as well.

Yeh it was a bit of an impulse buy, although the gold label may well surprise me yet!
I'll post a little review here when it arrives

Based on the price alone that is not top level sencha but some sort of daily sencha (around 800yen/100g). But if it is traditional Uji-style sencha(?) it must be better than o-chas usual powdered sencha stuff

I think uji no tsuyu is one of the most common japanese tea brands - all japanese food stores in Sweden carry their teas at least, and I've seen it in supermarkets in Japan too.
At the moment I have their hojicha, and their sencha teabags at my office at work - both are rather good.
When it comes to easily available sencha I usually go for another brand - "yamama masudaen" - one reason is that they use to mark their tea with a best before date, which often is missing on packages from uji no tsuyu.
I don't think I have tried the uji no tsuyu gold label sencha though.

That's fantastic, for ages I've been interested in trying some sencha which the ordinary people of Japan drink everyday, perhaps this is related to my historical interests in mass consumerism some how. I'd be interested in aquring some more popular brands, can anybody recommend some?

Sorry this has been a while coming...
For the money this tea seems pretty decent, have been drinking it alot first thing in the morning when my tastebuds are not quite fully awake, also as iced tea quite a bit.
First steep tends to be fairly vegetal with little astringency, subsequent steeps are sweeter and more grassy. I was quite impressed by the size of the open leaves, very little dust makes for easy Kyusu cleaning!
Just out of interest does anybody else have a morning tea which is perhaps slightly cheaper, thereby saving the more expensive stuff for later when the tastebuds can fully appreaciate it?
