I bought this set of three Japanese tea canisters on eBay late last year. They're made from cherry bark (sakura); this kind of "bark craft" is known as kabazaiku.

The largest one is the perfect size for a standard bag (100-110g) of sencha, and it's currently holding this year's Shincha Fukamushi Supreme from O-Cha

I love the fact that the interiors are made of wood, not tin. The outer lids tend to be a little loose, but the inner lids are super-snug, which is the main thing:

Cherry bark is a warm, sensual, and beautifully textured wood (albeit a little hard to photograph well - it gleams so much):

I'm mainly a pottery girl, but I have to admit that the Japanese do fantastic things with wood and lacquer, too!

P.S. If you want to go really nuts, check out this blog entry and scroll 1/3 of the way down to get a sense of the variety of kabazaiku available - or just look here!

Nice, chamekke.

I have a similar wood canister that I bought in Takayama last year.

I've seen those tea canisters around for a while now. I've been considering getting one, but I can't bring myself to pay the cost for them.

But oh man, some of those are absolutely gorgeous.

They are beautiful!!! Some from the link are fabulous, too. I don't use or collect asian teaware but I could get into these!

Awesome Marshal! I love your whisk, never seen one that color before...

* Patiently sits down and waits for Chamakke to post a dissertation on the different colors of whisks...*

PS, all the teaware huddled around that tray in the background is making me nervous...

Snork! I can't begin to keep up with you guys...

Actually I'm not even sure whether this is susudake (naturally darkened or smoked bamboo) or one of the other darker grades. I do remember a tea friend saying that dark bamboo is prized and, therefore, more expensive as a rule. But not much more than that!

According to the Marukyu-Koyamaen website, there are several different types of bamboo used for chashaku (scoops), including: susudake (as above), shimidake ("stained" bamboo, I think), and gomadake (which literally means sesame bamboo - sesame-coloured presumably?).

There are probably even more types than that... but how they rank against each other, in terms of either formality or rarity, I do not know.

Nice teaware.
Does this kind of chawan have a specific name?

Not much gardening going on.

Thanks. :)

Lol, well I got 3 different types of lettus, a special slow bolt cilantro, parsley, and a mint planted. Also got ready for beans in a couple weeks if the weather holds. Just didn't photograph the gardening and the gong fu video was kinda a whim. Shot squatting with one hand holding my crappy 5 year old point and shoot in unfocused low quality video mode. It's a miracle it turned out as well as it did, I used every second of video I shot. lol.

Cleopatra hates being photographed, only good picts I've ever got of her are when she's sleeping or doesn't know the camera is out. She's a weirdo.
