I thought I detected a certain desperation, actually. It didn't help that I told him to go read another post that didn't actually address what he was asking. Perhaps he felt that I was fobbing him off?
Anyway, I felt a bit contrite after reading his cri de coeur and responded at more length. Hopefully he's getting closer to the response he needs.
After all, if a teahead can't ask this kind of question here, where can he ask it?

Well, I wasn't trying to farm for compliments, but now I know the secret: snarkiness.
Maybe that's what ITD is all about. A place for people to be snarky without fear of misunderstanding. (Of course, if that is the case, we should have crowned a [/i]certain someone[/i] "King of ITD" long ago.)

I was going to reply to the previous post with search results for the word "snarky" in ITD ... I remember much talk of it. Perhaps some threads have been deleted, or maybe I'm only remembering tangential methods of communication at its inception -- IRC and chat -- but snarkiness *was* a deciding factor.
He he he! Oh, Mocha Wheels, you dumb, dumb *BOO*.
For those of you not in the loop, Ms. MW called me out on the carpet after I posted this comment on Space's blog. She a) wanted to know what "sharkiness" was, b) thought it was horribly inappropriate that I insinuated anything potentially negative about her and c) didn't mention anything directly to her first. There was much venting on my part here...and I think the thread East's thinking of was that one.
For the record, the ITD threads get pruned and edited a lot more than anything in the regular forum. I always delete voting polls, of course, but sometimes I randomly delete silly little chatty threads. And I do try to cull things like that MW thread. We will always have new things to gripe about, and maybe I'm being superstitious, but keeping that sort of negativity around seems like bad juju to me.

I can't help but feel kind of sorry for the poor chap... sounds frantic and a bit unstable, sort of in that Kerouac "chain-of-consciousness-on-speed" writing style...
Not that I myself am un-guilty of long posts on occasion... but I like to think my periodic ramblings contain information, links, and/or pretty pictures, and often display evidence of underlying reasoning capability on the part of the writer

I'm in complete agreement. It's great to vent, but I don't think we want several of these threads floating around. Bad juju indeed, and I don't think it sends a good message to new commers.Mary R wrote:We will always have new things to gripe about, and maybe I'm being superstitious, but keeping that sort of negativity around seems like bad juju to me.

It's not quite as rude as it sounds, honest. (Is it a Britishism/Commonwealth term, then? I hadn't realized.)Salsero wrote:chamekke wrote: Perhaps he felt that I was fobbing him off?
I don't even want to know what this means!
Now I know you didn't ask, bu-u-t...

Yes, perhaps "frantic" was the word I should have reached for. For sure there was a slightly hysterical tone to the posting. My eyebrows did go up an inch or two while I was reading it, I"ll admit.joelbct wrote:I can't help but feel kind of sorry for the poor chap... sounds frantic and a bit unstable, sort of in that Kerouac "chain-of-consciousness-on-speed" writing style...
Let's see whether he keeps up that tone in his postings. It might be a one-off, after all. Maybe he was having a bad day, and I inadvertently pushed his button.
