I voted 'used car' because any place you can go on a scooter, you can go on a bicycle. So "used car and a good bike" is a killer combination.

I have a dual-basket thing I some times hook up to my bike. Each basket is essentially the size/shape of a paper grocery bag turned sideways.

Don't know about where Joel lives, but in Fort Worth, our city streets aren't very bicycle friendly.

Shoot, Fort Worth doesn't even strike me as motorist-friendly!

Any town with the name Fort in it, can't be bicycle friendly. I think it is the law.

Here in CT, not too far from Joel, I believe, is terribly non-friendly to anything on two wheels. Heck, they even run over anything bipedal. For both safety and security I'd go for the car. Plus weather in the Northeast can be tricky stuff.

Errr, sorry...   I was thinking of Chip.

Hey, speaking of which, how about a motorized bicycle? I have a buddy at work who buys sturdy old Raleigh bikes, souping them up with electric motors. He's very proud of them... keeps bringing them into the office and showing them off.

What are your grocery and cooking habits? If you're lugging lots of fresh goodies back home all the time, the car would easily be worth the extra investment and hit in eco-coolness.
