i'm heading up to the big apple this weekend, and i'd like to include some nice tea shops in my journey. i've been searching for stuff online, but as with all things new york, there is just SO much out there. so i'm soliciting the advice of those more well-versed in nyc than i am.
any recommendations?
any advice on shops or tasting/drinking/chilling rooms would be much appreciated!
p.s. i really like both oolong and pu-erh, but i can also get down on some japanese greens and darjeelings.
Re: nyc tea rooms
Thread w/ Ito En pics. It's at 69th and Madison. It is a cool shop, they have Japanese Teaware and ~100 varieties of excellent Tea (Japanese is their specialty), but it's not really a Restaurant/Tea Room- Although they do run a Japanese Restaurant upstairs (Kai) that also serves Tea.scotty X wrote:i'm heading up to the big apple this weekend, and i'd like to include some nice tea shops in my journey. i've been searching for stuff online, but as with all things new york, there is just SO much out there. so i'm soliciting the advice of those more well-versed in nyc than i am.

Cha-An at 9th St btwn 2nd and 3rd is about the most popular Tea Room in NY at the moment, in terms of hip-ness and buzz. Supposed to have excellent desserts as well. Might be difficult getting a table on peak/weekend hours though, so call ahead to check- they don't take reservations for some reason, either.
As for Western-style Tea Rooms, I'm not entirely sure... You could try the Plaza or some other upscale hotel that would probably have a Tea service. Good luck!

Funny you mention this one! I just read a blog review of this place because the person had tried Tencha, which was offered there.joelbct wrote: Cha-An at 9th St btwn 2nd and 3rd is about the most popular Tea Room in NY at the moment, in terms of hip-ness and buzz. Guess this is coming too late but my wife and I enjoyed called TeaNY https://www.teany.com/
This was several years ago, 2005 I think. We enjoyed the tea and the great breakfast food we ate there.
