Resources for Making Chawan?

by joelbct » Aug 18th, '08, 22:37

So I am planning to start this Ceramics Class in September. Can anyone recommend resources they can come across for making Chawan, preferably in English? Either books, or online info?

I see this book from Japan Culture Ebay Store, but it is a bit overpriced for a 40 page "book," and there is no translation...

Then there is this or this from Amazon Japan, but again, it's in Japanese, and I don't even know if that's a Chawan... ;)

And

thanks in advance-

Well, if you decide you want the one that Japan Culture Ebay Store is selling, why not buy it from Amazon Japan for ¥1050 instead of US $34.95 on eBay :)

It seems to me that there are books on making pottery in the Japanese style (not necessarily chawan-specific ones), but I don't own any myself. I'll ask a couple of friends and if I can find out any titles, I'll post the info here.

P.S. This might not be a bad place to start:
Inside Japanese Ceramics: Primer Of Materials, Techniques, And Traditions

Thanks, that one looks great!

I just ordered this one, the 318 page contemporary chawan book with makers marks, but from Amazon Japan.

Looks like it contains fantastic pictures. I think I will hold off on the Japanese-language ceramics instructive books though, got to have that in English.

No help for you here, but the two books you linked to on Amazon Japan are both "how to make Chawan", basically.
