Tea books and magazines?

by Beanbean » Mar 29th, '08, 09:51

Hi. I'm new here and I'm not quite sure where to post this. Please be patient with me!

I LOVE tea. I've been drinking tea for over 40 years (and I'm not that old!) but I find that I really don't know that much about it except that it is almost impossible to get a good cup of tea outside of my own kitchen and I know what I like. :)

That said, can anyone make any suggestions about periodicals and books that might be helpful to a new apprentice? I am so happy that I stumbled upon this site and I've already learned a lot in the 24 hours I've been registered here. I have picked up a couple of issues of "Tea" magazine, mostly for the photos, recipes and ads but I was wondering if there is a "tea rosetta stone" for newbs.

The most useful informations on tea and how to brew it you can get are on forums (especially here) or teablogs.

If you are looking for a book, I like "New tastes in green tea"

It contains a brief history of Japanese green tea, have some nice photos and gives good recipes.

I've recently discovered Google Books, which provides some books for free (often those past copyright), others with a limited preview, and some with just a summary. There are a surprising number of books about tea available there, as well as some really fascinating publications that are more than a century old.

Don't forget that your local library might have some good books on tea, and that's free, too. :)

Ah, thanks! I was very confused for a minute, until I figured out that there are two boards here called Other. ;)

The Art of Tea magazine is an excellent supplement to any books you may be reading on the subject of tea. It is available from the Hou De Asian website.
