And it seemed to be such a simple question.

Thanks, bears.

No question is simple once Bears gets his teeth into it!

Wow, thanks for the crash course :) Now it sounds like the problem with bamboo largely has to do with a lack of moisture. I know it is usual practice to regularly oil wood products (such as cutting boards) in order to preserve the wood. Does anyone know if that would work on bamboo?

I'm still happier with my Pie Plate Gong Fu than any prettier system I have managed to set up. Course I don't drag it out for guests, but when it's just me ... well, nothing beats it!

I heard when they made bamboo trays traditionally, they let bamboo materials stay in warehouse years to be seasoned through all humid and dry days. Then when the bamboo tray (or any bamboo ware) is made, it's sun dried thoroughly and then painted with tung oil (the same oil for painting traditional umbrella and modern guitar). Nowadays how many manufacturers are willing to pay such efforts :P

For dry climate caused problems, I wonder if the seasoning oil of bamboo cutting board would work. For open glue, I have no clue what to do.

New England climate so far seems great. Knock wood... all above posts got me worried

My two cents, for whatever that's worth.

I bought a bamboo tray from Rishi over a year and a half ago, and it still looks like new; I could've bought it last week. And while it will probably start leaking eventually, as I don't dispute Marshal's input, I suspect by then I will have hade my money's worth.

I also bought a cheap 20 dollar tray, that leaked instantly. And though I fixed that with some silicone caulk, after two months use the tray looks like hell. It's coming apart at the seams.

If you choose bamboo, go for quality.
