Figural Teapots

by treazure » Dec 1st, '08, 11:01

I'm a bit reluctant to post this since none of my figural teapots can be used for Ding how bok choy or moo goo gai pan or whatever, but does anyone else on TC collect figural teapots? If so, what do you collect?

That said, I shall now finish putting a stake through my heart and confess that I collect figural cat teapots. Most are ones I have never seen before, but a couple have been mass produced but still hold a place in my heart.

Unfortunately, most are not signed nor do most of them have markings. Yeah, they're probably crap, but I love them. Some day I'll get a camera and attempt to take pictures.

My husband gave me my favorite figural cat teapot. It is one I have not seen duplicated (but I know there are probably 3,000,000 out there). This teapot is of two cats, male and female, embracing or dancing together. It is in a pale pink with small flowers randomly placed. The only markings are a small label which says "Norcrest Made in China." I have done many searches online for this teapot but cannot find it.

He ordered this pot for me (gotta love eBay) when I was in the hospital with low odds of coming home again, and gave it to me when he brought me home. One of the few things that managed to get me to fight hard enough to learn how to do little things like turn over, sit up, feed myself, walk, talk, etc, was that teapot.

Come to think of it...so many people say that they'd rather die if they couldn't do for themselves and had to depend on others. Been there, done that but you want to know what? I'd do it again. Life is so much more than going and doing. It was an interesting time.

To be totally honest, some days the only things that keep me upright and breathing are my husband, those silly teapots, the cats and dogs and Tea Chat.

So am I the only collector of figurals?

PS: have a few non-cats. Dragon, Peter Rabbit, huge polar bear teapot with a strand of Christmas tree lights wrapped around him and a penguin my sis gave me.

This horse is the only figural teapot that I own:

My husband got it for me last christmas. I don't really use it, as its really too big for the tea I usually make, but I love it.
It sounds like your pot collection means a lot to you, and you really enjoy it. That's great! I'd love to see some pictures of your clowder of cats.

Love dragons. My writing partner gave me a gorgeous dragon teapot and cups some years ago. I should get another dragon teapot to keep that one happy.

I never use teapots that can be replaced. It was bad enough that monster potato killed my favorite, but it was replaceable.

A fellow Freecycler gave me a glass curio type cabinet which lights up. The interior shelves turn around slowly. It used to be a cabinet for expensive crystal figurines which were sold at a jewelery store.

Adore the black pot! It looks like it will have an interesting feel and the lid fits so perfectly.

Let me know how your deals go with the China dealer, ok? He has some things that need to live here. One other China dealer had a yixing type teapot with an inscribed wild cat but I prefer the look of the pots which are glazed outside - especially if they are blue.

Not the most unique kettle, since one other sold this week, but look what I just won for $1.99.

I wanted to do buy it now but never heard back from the seller, so I went the auction route and paid a lot less.

muahahah

treazure, your pots sound super-appealing. I'd love to see them! Your new cat-and-mouse teapot is adorable. (Of course, since I was born in the Year of the Mouse, I'd prefer it to be a mouse with a cat in its paws, but there you go  )

I don't have much in the figural line (mainly because I don't have the space), but I do very much enjoy looking at figural teapots. Yesterday my local consignment store had a very fetching "pig" figural teapot, and although I didn't buy it, I spent some happy time looking it over very thoroughly.

Chamekke- Your local consignment store sounds like an absolute treasure trove of teawares. I am so jealous.

I usually find about 5 cat teapots to one pig teapot, if that helps make up your mind. Right now there is a Wood's complete pig teapot set going for $25 on eBay with a few minutes to go. That is a really good deal.

Anyone starting figural teapot and teaware things might want to surf eBay a little to see what the trends are, and what the junk pots are. For example, there are China dealers who flood eBay with mass produced garbage, touting it as 'antique" and "authentic." har de har har

Kind of like a tea cup and saucer set I saw last year. The description was full of words like antique and said it was from 1890's. They even took a picture of the back side of the saucer. It said...

Ready for this?

Microwave and dishwasher safe.

 And someone bought it.

Off to wash dishes. Bleah.
