They are "fermented" (read left to rot), so the same bacteria action might happen to the nuggets
I have seen natto but never seen it being sold here. I had TEMPEH though it's probably natto Indonesian style but dried and pressed. Never thought of natto comparison but you're probably right with the bacterial/enzymatic action.

what a coincidence,
yesterday, I brewed up some 9908 for the first time in a while and somewhere around the third steep I hapened to gaze into the pot and noticed an exceptionally round "nugget". pulled that sucker out and it appeared to be almost perfectly spherical and smooth, like a little turd... it looked just like a deer turd or some such other turd of similar origin... and I almost vomited!

upon closer inspection, it appears to be some sort of berry. dingleberry? no, it's of plant origin. it's totally brown like the rest of the shu, but there is a little crowned top where a stem had attached almost just like a blueberry. I split that shit, and whadda you know, perfectly preserved seeds inside. the thing that struck me silly was the fact that every single nanometer of the "berry" was the exact same brown color. even the entire seed structure.

i know this isn't as nasty or dangerous as a cigarette butt or glass, but unfortunately it has really turned me off of this brick. it tastes good, and i'll prolly brew it up again, but i'll prolly always vommit a little in my mouth every time i look into the pot at those little balls. and what's this mucus like glue holding them together others are talking about? wait...why the hell and I drinking this again?????????lol

OK... that just tickled my funny bone! Turd tea.

  Mucus and turds and petrified berries and glass and bugs and hair? What, no human teeth and bones? You Pu-heads are NOT inspiring me to continue on my Pu exploration, I just want you to be aware of that.

I don't personally like lao tuo puerh. I believe it is the equivalent of floor sweepings. Supposedly, the nuggets form at the bottom of the pu pile during the shou process. The weight and heat of the pile is what causes the nuggets to form. the process of making Shou is like making sausage, it isnt pretty. Essentially, I find it quite nasty since it is the stuff that never got the appropriate environment. I think puerh factories are selling it with a little help of creative marketing IMHO
